Author Heather Long On Comic Books & Heroes

Please join me in welcoming author Heather Long to the blog today. She’s here to talk about some life lessons everyone needs to learn, but some never do, and her book, Yesterday’s Heroes. Don’t forget to enter the giveaway for a chance to win a copy of Yesterday’s Heroes or Marshal of Hel Dorado! Everything I Needed to Know I Learned in Comic Books My mother never saw value in reading comic books. She called it “a waste of money” and, worse, “a waste of my time.” Unfortunately for her, I was a stubborn kid. When she ‘threatened’ to never pay for my comics again, I got a part time job and paid for them myself. When she refused to get me a ride to the comic book store, I took four different buses a total of twelve miles—including a half-mile walk to the bus stops on either end. When … Continue reading

Judging A Book By Its Cover with Malia Mallory

Today we have Erotic Romance Author Malia Mallory to talk about the value of a book’s cover. These days, the cover is more important than ever, since it has to catch the reader’s eye all by itself – no cute store displays, no table in the center aisle, no big shelf stocked with a hundred copies. Just that lonely little cover there in the virtual bookstore, along with all the others. Now, here’s Malia: Enticing Erotica Covers I recently decided some of my covers needed an upgrade. I’d been looking around at the fabulous covers of my author friends and feeling jealous. In fact, I was becoming concerned it might even be hurting my sales. I needed to step it up. So, what to do? I contacted a cover artist who had done some work I admired. She did a new design concept for my ABCs of Erotica series. I … Continue reading

Life’s Little PMS Moments

This little gem is from a friend, Romance Author Kate Worth’s Blog. I know you’ll enjoy it as much as I did! Read the next two sentences in the voice of Andy Rooney. I don’t know why, but it’s just more fun. I’ve read countless romance novels over the years, but I don’t remember ever reading one that featured a PMS moment.  Why is that? There are plenty of delicate mentions of women’s ”courses” in romantic fiction, but never any discussion of those dicey, emotionally fraught days leading up to her “monthlies”.  Granted, there isn’t much romantic about PMS, but the symptoms could provide some funny or suspenseful plot devices. Jim Carrey’s classic SNL skit about a PMS Hotline illustrates this.  It’s one of my all-time favorites. Here’s a video link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ho5UvzNZC2o Apparently PMS is also a fact of life for insects. I snapped this shot of a Praying Mantis casually dismembering … Continue reading

Love Scenes & Wet Dreams & Other Things

Recently, my friends and critique partners, Azure Boone and Jennifer James, and I decided to to start a group blog. The general idea was for it to be a place where we could jointly promote our work, talk about things important to us, things we find funny, and just generally be a little silly. And so, the idea for Love Scenes & Wet Dreams, a.k.a. LSWD, was born. We have several ideas for the blog, some of which will take a while to implement. For now, we’ll all incredibly busy, between writing and raising our families, and we don’t have as much time to devote to it as we’d like. So, we’re concentrating on the basics, getting everything situated the way we’d like and building content. When we have time to catch our breath, we’ll switch up the focus to getting some different things going. Right now, Azure has up a … Continue reading

Brats, B!tches, and Barbies

*First, I’d like to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and positive energy as my family dealt with the loss of Reno, my much-loved step-dad. With your help, we made it through and managed to celebrate his life and rejoice that he doesn’t have to suffer any longer. The funeral was one of the largest our little town had ever seen, and there were 20+ classic cars in the procession. The only blemish on the day was my step-brother’s ex-wife. In her blatant gold digging, she cozied right up to SB, despite having called Reno everything but a milk-cow only a few weeks ago. Everyone knew she was only being nice to SB in order to get “her share” of his inheritance. Everyone except SB, that is. Oh, well. There are a few surprises coming her way, and she won’t be a happy camper when it’s all said and done.* … Continue reading

“Never” Is Just Too Damn Long

I despise political rants where the writer calls you stupid if you don’t agree with their politics. I always said I never do a politics related post here. But “Never” is a long time, so I’m breaking that promise to you, and myself. But I still won’t call you stupid, won’t talk about the… Never mind. Relax, though. No axes to grind here. My issue is with the process, rather than the participants. At least as far as this post is concerned. So, you ask, what about politics has compelled Kenra to take a break from writing? After all, I’m only ONE scene from finishing what I sincerely HOPE is the FINAL round of revisions and edits of Blood Dragon I, now tentatively titled Safe Heart. Sometime this week, hopefully my critique partners, Azure Boone and Jennifer James, will have had time to give it a quick read and make … Continue reading

Don’t Let the Door Hit You On the Ass

That’s what we say here when we’re beyond ready for guests to leave. Of course, not many say it to the guests’ faces. Every year or two, I hear of people within the publishing industry who say Paranormal Romance is on the decline, or on the way out. Sometimes, the tone accompanying the pronouncement seems to say “… And don’t the let door hit you on the ass on the way out.” In certain circles, Paranormal Romance is considered less desirable reading than the back of the cereal box, and that’s usually where the above-mentioned tone comes from. But occasionally, I get that impression from some within the Romance family, as well. As an avid PNR reader for 20+ years, I’ve sometimes observed a corresponding slump in the number of new Paranormal Romances being released. The first few times I heard the prediction and saw fewer new releases at the … Continue reading

In the Spotlight: Author Gabrielle Bisset on Author-Character Love

Please join me in welcoming author Gabrille Bisset today! She’s here to give us the goods on the heroes she’s written, and fell in love with. Below is a blurb from Blood Avenged, first in her new series The Sons Of Navarus. This month, my review of Blood Avenged will go up on March  21 at GraveTells.com. Stop by and check it out. I can tell you now, you really want to read this book!   Buy Blood Avenged (Sons of Navarus) by Gabrielle Bisset at Amazon I’ve written a number of characters who stay with me more than others.  My one villain turned hero, Amon Kalins, will forever be my first author-character love.  I fell in love with him as soon as he hit the page (I hand write everything, so the idea literally came out on a piece of paper).  And as soon as he entered the story, he threatened to take up all the air in … Continue reading

Sorta Spotlight, First Five, Plus Some Temporary Changes

In Lieu of this week’s Spotlight: First a few notes: These days, it seems the more I accomplish, the further behind I get! In an effort to buckle down and get the priorities taken care of. Thanks to #writemotivation, I’ve had to plan how best to meet my goals, and that’s what this is.  Right now, getting Blood Dragon out on submission is my highest priority professionally. I need to hit it hard until it’s perfect, and get it out there. To that end, some of my posts here will be recycled content from months ago. I posted these back when my blog went several days at a time with no visits, so they should be fresh to you. I’ll still be posting new content as well, just not as much. In April, I’ll be celebrating my first Blogaversary! Gonna try to do something special to celebrate, but I haven’t decided … Continue reading
